SheRises Ethiopia exists to restore hope and dignity to women and children whose lives have been upended by war, extreme poverty, and acute hunger. Through direct financial support, we help meet urgent, life-sustaining needs and support women as they rebuild their health, wellbeing, and independence.
OUR STORY
This video depicts the devastation caused by the August 2025 floods and the fragile, precarious living conditions many families still endure.
Five years later, many women are still living in camps, sheltering under tarps and plastic coverings with little protection from the elements. Conditions remain unsafe for them to return home.
SheRises Ethiopia was created to respond to the urgent needs of women and children whose lives were shattered by brutal civil conflicts in Ethiopia. Women and girls suffered some of the most severe consequences of the violence, including widespread and systematic sexual violence used as a weapon of war. Many continue to live with its effects—incapacitating health complications, homelessness and displacement, the loss of loved ones, and the destruction of the livelihoods that once sustained their families.
Presently, we provide direct monthly financial stipends that help women cover a portion of their families’ essential needs, including food, housing, healthcare, and education for their children. In the near future, we plan to offer microgrants to support small business ventures and help families move toward lasting economic independence.
OUR HISTORY
Although SheRises Ethiopia was formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization in late June 2026, the initiative began much earlier. In January 2024, our grassroots effort was launched with the support of a small group of friends who were deeply moved by the suffering of women and children affected by the conflict. Their contributions allowed us to provide direct financial assistance to our first group of recipients—women and children in Tigray who had survived unprecedented sexual violence and exploitation during the war.
In April 2025, SheRises Ethiopia expanded its reach into the Amhara region, specifically the Wollo area, where ongoing border conflicts continue to displace families and destabilize communities.
With increased support, we hope to expand our work to additional regions across Ethiopia where women and children face similar hardships.
